The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, says search rescue operation continues at the site of the gas explosion in Kano, the second biggest commercial city in Nigeria, even as nine,9, dead bodies have been recovered.

Director General NEMA, Mustapha Habib Ahmed stated this in Kano, stressing that, the search and rescue operation will continue until all trapped persons are rescued.
According to him, NEMA is presently coordinating the rescue operations involving members of the Nigerian Red Cross, military, the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corp.
“I was at the site of the incident and coordinated the rescue operations. I mobilised excavators being used for the rescue operations.
“The team will ensure complete removal of the rubble to retrieve all trapped persons,” he assured.
He said 9 dead bodies have so far been recovered from the rubble of a collapsed building beside a primary school following explosions from gas cylinder at Aba Road in Sabon Gari area of Kano.
He said NEMA and other security agencies will remain on the site until the rescue operations are completed
“I have instructed the NEMA rescue team to remain at the site until conclusion of the rescue and to work together with security agencies and other response organisations present at the location,” said Ahmed.
The Nigeria Police had earlier confirmed four persons dead but the toll rose to 9 as the rescue operations continued.
