Kano Government Seeks Canadian Support In Addressing Floods, Erosion

The Kano State Government in North West Nigeria, has solicited the support of the Canadian Government in tackling the menace of Flooding, Erosion and Draught.
Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano state made the plea when he played host the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria Mr. Jamie Christoff in Kano City.
He said, despite efforts of the state government to address the problem Kano requires the support of Canada in order to curtail the problems ravaging the 44 Local Government Areas.
We have some environmental and climate challenges to which we want the Canadian Government to assist Kano state.”
“Kano state being close to the Sahara desert is facing very serious challenges due to climate change especially Draught, Erosion and floods in all the 44 Local Government of the state.”
Governor Yusuf also solicits the support of Canada in the area of health intervention to complement his administration’s efforts on health for the benefit of vulnerable people in the state.
The Governor appreciated the support of the Canadian Government in many areas including Agriculture.
He said, “Kano has the biggest irrigation infrastructure in Northern Nigeria. We have 22 Dams and we are engaged in the provisions of irrigation infrastructure for all season production of food and cash crops as well livestock and fisheries.”
Also speaking, the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria Mr. Jamie Christoff in informed Governor Yusuf that he was in the state to see how to build commercial relations with Kano state for business.
He added that, he is also in Kano to celebrate some of the projects the Canadian Government is executing in supporting Kano state.
These projects includes, the $15. 7 million project that is aimed at empowering women to further engaged in the Agricultural sector. This is a point of pride because I know Agriculture is a priority of the Governor.”
Mr. Christoff explained that, he will hold series of engagement with some kano key players in the business community for mutual collaboration.
