Kano State Government has commenced a capacity-building training for Heads of Departments (HODs) from six Local Government Areas (LGAs) as part of efforts to achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) status across the state.
The training, organised by the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), targets HODs from Doguwa, Sumaila, Bebeji, Tudun Wada, Tofa, and Bunkure LGAs.
Speaking at the opening session, the Director of Planning and Mobilisation, RUWASA, Mrs Zahara’u Isyaku, said the exercise was designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to drive ODF activities in their respective LGAs.
She noted that RUWASA had earlier conducted field visits to assess progress and challenges in the implementation of sanitation programmes in the selected areas.
“The training is aimed at sensitising HODs on their roles in promoting sanitation and empowering them to engage communities more effectively,” she said.
Isyaku emphasised that achieving ODF status was critical to improving public health, as poor sanitation practices greatly contribute to the spread of waterborne diseases.
She reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring all communities in the state have access to safe and hygienic sanitation facilities, in line with Nigeria’s national target to end open defecation.
Some participants commended RUWASA for organising the training and pledged to cascade the knowledge gained to others at the grassroots level.
