Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has disbursed N50,000 each as start-up capital to hundreds of women under the state’s monthly Empowerment and Poverty Relief Programme, aimed at strengthening small-scale businesses and improving livelihoods.
The development was disclosed in a statement signed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature.
Speaking while flagging off the 2026 phase of the disbursement at the Government House, Governor Yusuf said the programme was deliberately structured to enable beneficiaries contribute meaningfully to the local economy.
He explained that the poverty alleviation initiative represents a direct fulfillment of his administration’s campaign promises to the people of Kano State, adding that 2026 has been designated as a year of intensive empowerment for men, women and youths.
According to the Governor, the programme has been consistently implemented since he assumed office, with thousands of women already benefiting and recording notable improvements in their standard of living.
Highlighting the impact of the scheme, Yusuf revealed that one beneficiary invested her initial N50,000 grant into a business venture and successfully grew it to over N1.2 million within two years.
He urged the new beneficiaries to make judicious use of the funds to support their families and contribute positively to their communities.
The Governor also commended the Kano State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Jibril Falgore, as well as the chairmen of the 44 local government councils, for their legislative backing and timely release of funds for the programme.
In his remarks, Speaker Falgore said the scale of infrastructural development and poverty reduction initiatives being executed by the Yusuf administration was evident across the state, noting that even critics have acknowledged the administration’s visible impact.
Earlier, speaking on behalf of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Chairman of Danbatta Local Government Council, Jamilu Dambatta, who represented the Chairperson, Hajiya Sa’adatu Soja, praised the Governor for his inclusive leadership and people-oriented empowerment programmes.
