The Governor of Kano State in North-West Nigeria, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has joined the global community in celebrating the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD), reiterating his administration’s commitment to empowering women and promoting gender inclusion across the state.
This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature.
Governor Yusuf described women as the backbone of society, noting that their contributions to families, community development, governance and economic growth remain invaluable.
He explained that the theme of this year’s celebration underscores the need to accelerate efforts to achieve equal opportunities and to ensure that women are given the platform to thrive in all sectors.
The governor stated that his administration remains committed to implementing policies and programmes aimed at promoting women’s education, economic empowerment, improved healthcare access and greater participation in governance.

According to him, the state government will continue to support initiatives that uplift women, particularly in entrepreneurship, vocational training and skills acquisition, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to the development of Kano State.
Governor Yusuf also commended women across the state for their resilience and dedication, acknowledging their vital roles in building strong families and communities.
He called on stakeholders, development partners and community leaders to support policies that protect women’s rights and expand opportunities for them.
The governor reaffirmed that his administration will continue to prioritise programmes that promote gender equity and ensure that women and girls in Kano State achieve their full potential.
