Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has called for urgent federal intervention following a second fire outbreak at the popular Singer Market in Kano metropolis.
The latest incident occurred at the Gidan Gilas section of the market, destroying shops and goods, and disrupting economic activities in one of Northern Nigeria’s busiest trading centres.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the governor said he visited the scene and commended firefighters for their efforts in battling the blaze.
He expressed sympathy with affected traders and described the repeated outbreaks as “a matter of national concern,” given the strategic role of markets in sustaining livelihoods and supporting the country’s informal economy.

Governor Yusuf urged the Federal Government to provide modern firefighting equipment, including air support and advanced emergency response tools, to strengthen disaster management capacity not only in Kano but in other major commercial cities across the federation.
“Upgrading fire service operations will significantly reduce losses from recurring market fires, which have affected several states in recent years,” he said.
The governor also commended the Kano State Fire Service and security agencies for their swift response, noting that their dedication helped prevent further escalation of the inferno.
He appealed to traders and residents to remain calm and cooperate with emergency responders as authorities assess the damage and work to restore normalcy.
The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for coordinated federal and state collaboration to protect Nigeria’s critical economic assets and safeguard the livelihoods of thousands who depend on commercial markets nationwide.
