Kano State is set to break a major fiscal milestone as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf prepares to present the state’s first-ever ₦1 trillion budget for the 2026 financial year.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature.

Governor Yusuf disclosed the development while opening a Special Executive Council Meeting convened to finalise deliberations on the proposed budget ahead of its presentation to the State House of Assembly next week.

According to the Governor, the historic budget size underscores his administration’s commitment to consolidating ongoing infrastructural expansion, urban renewal initiatives, and broad-based socio-economic development across Kano State.

He attributed the unprecedented figure to improved internally generated revenue (IGR) and the successful plugging of financial leakages within the public system.

“Our administration has strengthened internal revenue mechanisms and sealed leakages, which now allows us to plan boldly for transformative projects in 2026,” Yusuf said.

The 2026 budget will prioritise housing development, agriculture, education, healthcare, and support for small and medium enterprises, sectors the government believes are crucial to stimulating economic growth and creating sustainable livelihoods for residents.

Once finalised, the proposed trillion-naira budget will be submitted to the Kano State House of Assembly for legislative scrutiny and approval.

Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to transparency, fiscal discipline, and ensuring that all sectors receive adequate support to deliver quality services to the people of Kano State.

If approved, the 2026 spending plan will become the largest budget ever presented by any state in northern Nigeria.
