Kano state north western Nigeria has received the first phase of 209,520 doses of the Astra-Zeneca Covid -19 Vaccine as the state Governor Dr. Umar Ganduje urges citizens to accept the Vaccine in order to eliminate Covid-19 in Nigeria.

Governor Ganduje made the call at a stakeholders meeting held at the Government House.

The stakeholders includes Traditional leaders, the media, Civil Society Organizations and among others.

Ganduje said the “stakeholders have a lot to do for rumors and conspiracy theories surrounding the vaccine to be thrown away and the vaccine accepted.”

The Head Kano state Covid-19 Technical Response Team Dr.Tijjani Hussien said priority in the distribution of the first phase of the vaccine will be given to Health workers, passengers at the Airport and strategic leaders for advocacy purpose.

He said Kano is 70 percent ready to commence the vaccination, stressing that in the next one or two days Kano will begin the roll out the vaccine.

“For success in administration of the vaccine, fixed posts at health facilities which include Primary, Secondary and tertiary health facilities will be used as they also ensure wider coverage.

Kano has 509 facilities across the 44 LGAS to be used as vaccination posts, three tertiary facilities, 37 secondary facilities and 469 primary facilities, said Dr. Tijjjani

He said the Covid-19 Response Team will evolve strategic activities and engagements to ensure the success of the vaccination as well as do monitoring during and after the vaccine for responses and effects.

METHODS OF GETTING REGISTERED FOR THE VACCINE

He said three methods will be used to get people registered for the first phase of the vaccine that have arrived, which includes getting registered through an android phone by  using  the link provided.

“The second approach is that for those that cannot register because of the lack of an android phone, an assisted registration mechanism will be introduced by the Kano state government with the National Primary Healthcare agency in such a way that people will be employed to carry out the registration exercise in various communities.

Another way is the concomitant registration site where people can access and say I want to get registered and they will be registered but the approach is not encouraged like the first two approaches,” explained Dr.Tijjani

He called the media to increase public sensitization to let people know that the vaccine is safe and will cause no harm as that will be the only way to achieve success.

Tijjani said such humane approach will douse rumors and conspiracy theories surrounding the vaccine.

Nigeria got over four million of the Astra Zeneca Covid-19 from which Kano the most populous state in the country is making ways to effectively distribute its share of 209,520 doses
