The Kano state Government, North West Nigeria, has taken steps to strengthen the structure of the traditional institution by inaugurating the reconstituted Kano Council of Emirs.

The move is aimed at strengthening the traditional institution and enhancing its role in governance, peacebuilding, and community development.

The new Council is chaired by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and includes the Emirs of Gaya, Karaye, and Rano as members.

Their inauguration follows Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s recent signing of the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Law 2024, which dissolved the five emirates created in 2019 and restored the unified structure of the historic Kano Emirate.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the government described the development as a significant step toward reinforcing the cultural, historical, and administrative foundations of one of Nigeria’s oldest traditional institutions.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Government House, Governor Yusuf said the reconstituted Council is expected to play a central role in promoting stability, good governance, and development across Kano one of Nigeria’s most influential states.

He said the traditional institution remains “a pillar of history, guardian of values, custodian of heritage, and an indispensable partner in governance.”

According to the Governor, the Council will serve as a platform for the Emirs to collectively deliberate and advise the government on issues affecting citizens, especially in areas of security, social harmony, and community development.

The Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, expressed confidence that the Council would help advance the state’s development agenda, while the Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Affairs, Prof. Tijjani Muhammad Naniya, highlighted the historical significance of returning to the centuries-old unified Kano Emirate structure.

Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, speaking on behalf of the member Emirs, described the move as timely and consistent with Kano’s historical traditions.

He commended Governor Yusuf for his leadership and developmental strides, pledging the Council’s commitment to contributing meaningfully to the state’s progress.
