The Kano State command of the Nigeria Police has arrested and paraded 32 kidnappers that have been terrorising, killing and collecting ransom from people.
The State commissioner of Police, Maigari Dikoi at a media briefing on Tuesday said the suspects were arrested by the Anti Kidnapping unit of the agency”, stressing that “21 victims of the kidnappers were rescued while one victim and a suspect lost their lives.”
Dikko said the feat was recorded within his one and half months of resumption in the office.
“In my efforts to track down the kidnappers, I embarked on an assessment tour of areas mostly affected, like Sumaila, Kibiya and Rano Local Government Areas of the State,” Dikko said.
He also said in the course of the operations N138, 000, 63 rounds of ammunition, 13 handsets, 100 SIM cards, three AK 47 rifles and pistols were recovered from them.
Three of the Kidnapping suspects were members of a group of cattle rustlers, who were granted amnesty by the Kano State Governor, Dr. Umar Ganduje.
“A three-man gang of the kidnappers were arrested in Katsina State by the Kano anti-kidnappers unit, who took a seven-year old girl hostage, demanding N120, 000 ransom from the girl’s parents, prior to her rescue,” he explained.
‘High profile kidnap’
Similarly, a 28-year-old man, Idris Bello from Kauru Local Government area of Kaduna State was arrested for conspiring with nine others now at large, who succeeded in kidnapping the step-mother to a member of the Kano State House of Assembly, representing Doguwa Local Government area.
Equally, another five syndicate of kidnappers, who were arrested at Gomo village in Sumaila Local Government Area, conspired with 11 others now at large, kidnapped an old-age father of a member representing Sumaila in the Kano State House of Assembly and snatched N110, 000 from him but was eventually rescued.
The police commissioner said during the period under review, another gang of 50 armed bandits stormed the house of a fFormer House member, representing Kibiya Local Government Area, Honourable Garba Shehu, shot dead one Kabiru Baba Wuro and kidnapped three persons.
Fortunately, the police were able to rescue three of the victims, while the third victim, Hajya Hauwa Garba was later rescued from the forest
Dikko appealed to the Kano Emirate Council to sensitise the general public on the need to give the police the necessary cooperation through synergy, timely and accurate information in order to bring criminal activities in the State to the barest minimum.
