Kano State Begins Restoration Of Water Supply To Communities

In a move to tackle perennial water challenges, the Kano State Government in North West Nigeria has concluded plans to pump 750 million litres of water daily to the Kano city and its environs.
To achieve this, the government has procured ten water pumping machines to be installed Tamburawa and Chalwa water treatment plants.
According to the Kano State Commissioner for Water Resources, Umar Doguwa, the government is currently working to achieve an initial target of 450 million litres per day, and subsequently improve to the projected 750 million litres.
He noted that “the governor, being an engineer himself, personally assessed all water treatment plants in the state and identified faulty water pumps as the primary issue. To resolve this, he procured ten new pumps.”
He said, six of the 110 kilowatts capacity pumps, would be installed at the Challawa Water Treatment Plant, which previously supplied 50 per cent of Kano’s water needs “before being shut down and vandalized recently.”
“The remaining four pumps of similar capacity would be installed at the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, and will restore water supply to Nasarawa and surrounding areas.”
The commissioner disclosed that Governor Abba Yusuf is planning to expand some water treatment plants including those at Joda and Wudil “that will cover the gap.”
Doguwa warned industries, commercial centres and individuals abusing treated water, particularly those diverting it for farming activities to desist from such or face the wrath of the government.
He said, “People are yearning for drinking water, yet some individuals illegally channel treated water to their farms. We are investigating those responsible, and if necessary, we will seize lands found engaging in such practices.”
Water Restoration in Villages:
Meanwhile, to ensure pipe-born water supply to rural areas, the Kano state Government has commenced the restoration of water supply to communities.
Blessed with water from Thomas dam in Kano North, the government Begins pumping water to various taps linking villages to different Communities in Minjibir and Makoda local government areas.
In a tour with journalists, to the communities, residents l who spoke in an interview expressed satisfaction for seeing their taps running.
Abubakar Kilawa said, “We are happy to see our taps running water today after eight years and we thanked Governor Yusuf and Commissioner Doguwa for reconnecting our villages with pipe Born water.”
Speaking in an interview, the Kano Water Resources Commissioner Umar Doguwa assured the people of the state of government’s determination to end the perennial water challenges in the state.
