Kano State distributes relief materials to Boat mishap Victims

The Kano State Government has commenced distribution of relief materials to relatives, families and  Victims of the boat mishap that  occured in Bagwai local government area.

The State Commissioner for Information, Mohammed Garba stated this after an emergency meeting of the State Executive held at the government house, Kano.

 

He said the victims including men, women and children were on transit from a village called
Badau to Bagwai to attend the annual Islamic Moulud when the accident occured on a River.

“Twenty nine (29) persons have sofar been confirmed dead, seven (7) rescued and are in Bichi General Hospital receiving treatment,  while search and rescue mission is on for the 14 missing persons, as there were a total of 40 persons in the boat,” the Commissioner said.

 

Distributed Items
He said the relief materials being distributed to the families and victim’s include 125 bags each of Maize, Millet, Rice, and corn, 60 bags each Sugar and salt and cash support of 100,000 Naira each amounting N6 million Naira.

The materials are being distributed to relatives of the dead and the survivors as I speak to you,” the Commissioner stated.

 

He said the state owned transport company, Kano Line, has been directed to provide two buses to be conveying people from Badau village to Bagwai for the period of one year.

 

“Subsequently, the state government has  planned to buy three (3) speed boats and life jackets for passengers plying the route,” Garba stated.

 

Investigative Committee
He said a high power investigation committee has been set up to look into the remote and immediate causes of the mishap and profer solutions to avoid future occurence.

 

The committee headed by the commander of the newly built Naval Base in Kano, Naval Captain Mohammed Abubakar, includes among others Suleiman Bichi of the Project monitoring Unit, Commissioners of Transport and Housing, Representatives of Commissioner of Local Government, Police, Civl defence, NEMA, DSS, while the Secretary will be provided by the Cabinet Office.
