Kano State Government, Partners Completes Africa’s Largest Grain Market

The Kano State Government in North West Nigeria, the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and Lives Livelihood Funds (LLF) have completed various critical projects at the Dawanau International Grains Market in Kano City to improve commercial activities.

The Infrastructural Engineer of Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project, Engr. Zaharaddeen Zarewa, said, the projects includes roads, Secretariat, Police Post drainages and street lights.

He told journalists that, in the partnership program, about N628 million has been spent on the project to develop the infrastructures in the International market.

Zarewa explained that, N508 million was used for the construction of four kilometers feeder roads in various parts of the market, drainages and solar powered streetlights.

On the other hand, N120 million is spent on the Construction of a Secretariat, Mosque and a police post.

“The projects are aimed at improving Agriculture particularly its value. And what Kano state government did was to close the infrastructure gap in the market.

Dawanau International Grains Market is the largest market in the whole of West Africa. Parts of what the market was lacking were good roads network, conference room, and street lights.

What the government did was to provide four kilometre of surface dress road and drainages to prevent flooding during raining season.”

Project Impact

The Deputy Chairman Dawanau International Grains Market Alhaji Baba Wawu expressed satisfaction on the Infrastructural development in the market.

He said, the projects have improved commercial activities in the night and security.

Wawu said, “we are very happy with the projects because many African Countries especially those neighboring No Nigeria are coming buying our products and these infrastructures has added value to what we do.”

The Dawanau International Grains Market is central to the sales of all kinds of grains in Nigeria and all the countries that share boarders with Nigeria.
