Determined to improve standards of Abattoirs, the Kano state Government in North West Nigeria in collaboration with Islamic Development Bank IsDB and Lives Livelihood Funds among other partners have constructed Abattoirs in twenty (20) Local Governments areas of the state.
The projects was executed by the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project.
The Infrastructural Engineer of Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project, Engr. Zaharaddeen Zarewa who took journalists round said, already, the Abattoirs have commenced operations with butchers carrying out their daily businesses of Animal slaughter.
He explained that, the Abattoirs are equipped with solar powered boreholes for a 24 hour water hygiene in the facilities.
Other facilities he mentioned includes hangers for slaughtered Animal meats, solar fans, industrial freezers for meat storage, offices, solar house, and animal dung disposal facilities as well as cooler rooms.
According to Zarewa, the aim was to enhance quality meat in circulation in Kano state and to improve businesses of the butchers.
“It was so sad when you go to our abattoirs in the local governments you hate to even eat meat, because of the way the meat is being processed, or handled. That’s why Kano state Government decided to construct befitting abattoirs in 20 LGA’s.”
He said, “we build everything here new and handed over the Chief Slaughter and his team to operate and maintain.”
“Inside the slaughter house we have four slaughter slaps the shorter ones were main to slaughter large ruminants while the taller one are for the smaller ruminants.”
Some of the Local Governments where these abattoirs are located includes, Rano, Doguwa, Tudun Wada, Bebeji, Bichi, Shanono, Wudil, Dawakin Tofa among others.
Zahradeen Zarewa noted that, each of the Abattoirs was constructed at coast of N80 Million naira.
He said, the slaughter animal capacity depends on the location as some slaughter higher number of Animals than the other.
The Chief Slaughter Kura Local Government, Ibrahim Tantabara while appreciating Government’s and partners said the new abattoirs with modern facilities has significantly eased difficulties and improved meat hygiene.
“Our butchers have reduced meat wastages and customers are now eating clean meat because of the facilities we no have here in the Abattoirs.
We thanked the Kano Government, Islamic Development Bank IsDB and Lives Livelihood Funds LLF and order donors for the community support. It has improved our businesses.“
Onion Storage Facility:
The Kano Government and partners also provided onion storage facilities in Karfi and Badume Community markets to improve their commercial and reduce wastages.
The Infrastructural Engineer of Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project, Engr. Zaharaddeen Zarewa said, “KSADP developed an idea onion aggregation where onion farmers in group can provide the building while Government can provide the technology for them to store their onions.”
He said onions can be stored for a period of six months with less damage to farmers.
Zarewa explained that, the facilities works on solar with each compartment storing 25 bags of onions.
Chairman Karfi community onion markets Bala Ibrahim who spoke on behalf of the farmers expressed gratitudes with the facilities as it improves their business.
