The Kano State Police Command has thwarted a planned violent protest and arrested 17 suspects accused of attempting to disrupt peace in the city.
Speaking at the command’s headquarters in Bompai, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, revealed that security personnel were deployed to strategic locations within Kano metropolis following credible intelligence about the planned unrest.
“Our swift response, in collaboration with other security agencies, led to the arrest of 17 suspected thugs.
“Investigations are ongoing to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice,” Kiyawa stated.
Warning
He reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order, warning individuals and groups against unlawful gatherings, processions, or acts of violence.
“Any attempt to breach public peace will be met with a swift and decisive response from security agencies. We urge residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities,” he added.
Earlier on Wednesday, security operatives dispersed demonstrators who had assembled at Kofar Nasarawa and other areas. Some protesters, who reportedly arrived in buses, gathered under a bridge before officers used tear gas to disperse them.
Although the motive behind the protest remains unclear, security has been tightened around the Kano Government House, with restricted access to certain sections of the area.
