The Kano State Government in northwest Nigeria says it aims to generate over N100 billion in revenue in 2025 to enhance service delivery across the state.

The Chairman of the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS), Dr. Zaid Abubakar, disclosed this during the 2025 Annual Performance Review and Strategic Planning meeting held in Kano.

According to him, Kano, as a centre of commerce, can generate more than two hundred billion naira annually as revenue, given its diverse industrial potential and commerce.

Abubakar noted that “Kano is a centre of commerce; we have five major markets that are critical not only in sub-Saharan Africa but also the entire continent in terms of fabrics, grains, and other commodities.”

He added that the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) will also leverage the existing manufacturing industries in the state and agriculture to meet its revenue targets.

Abubakar said KIRS will sustain efforts in blocking revenue leakages by embarking on a central single account.

He explained that the KIRS, through the government, will achieve that by reviewing the state’s revenue generation laws as part of efforts to enhance the revenue base of the state.

Abubakar said Governor Abba Yusuf has approved the review of such laws before the end of the first quarter of this year.

He said, “We have to rewrite the laws because approval has been given by His Excellency Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, which we hope to do before the end of the first quarter of this year.”

He said reviewing the tax laws was necessary to enhance overall revenue generation in the state as the existing tax laws are obsolete and ineffective.

According to him, the service had introduced a central revenue account to ensure transparency and accountability as well as to block all leakages.

The Executive Chairman added that KIRS has introduced taxpayer engagement as part of measures to ensure that all taxpayers are fully sensitised on the activities of the service.

“The taxpayer engagement is aimed at coming closer to taxpayers to reduce the work burden on our staff as we have to closely engage them.

He commended the governor for the support and cooperation he had provided the service, which he said had made their duty easier.

The Special Adviser to Governor Yusuf on Revenue, Prof. Ibrahim Barde, urged the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) to address some of the challenges bedevilling the revenue generation system in the state.

Abubakar explained that the state government is considering the possibility of introducing the collection of revenue on agricultural produce in the state.
