The Kano State Government in North West Nigeria says plans are on to host a high-level National Summit focused on harnessing the creative industry as a tool for economic growth and national development.
According to a statement from the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, the decision follows a compelling proposal submitted by the Kannywood Foundation, which underscored Kano’s strategic position as the cultural and creative hub of Northern Nigeria.
He explained that the summit aims to unlock the vast economic potential embedded in Kano’s creative sector, including film, fashion, artisanal work, music, literature, and digital media.
The Commissioner noted that the summit is expected to draw participation from key stakeholders across the country, including international development partners, federal government agencies, creative entrepreneurs, investors, and global platforms such as Netflix and Amazon.
The summit will feature strategic discussions on using the creative industry to diversify Nigeria’s economy, create jobs, and inspire innovation, especially among youth.

To ensure effective organization, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the formation of a Local Organizing Committee (LOC) comprising representatives from the government, private sector, creative associations, traditional institutions, and academia.
“This summit is more than an event—it’s a strategic move to position Kano at the forefront of Nigeria’s creative economy,” Waiya stated.
“Kannywood and our renowned artisans are already gaining national and international attention. With this summit, we aim to deepen their impact, empower our youth, and stimulate sustainable development in line with Governor Yusuf’s people-centered vision.”
The state government has called on all stakeholders to support the initiative, which aligns with broader efforts to promote youth empowerment, cultural preservation, and economic diversification.
