The Kano State Government is taking steps to enhance access to education for its citizens by focusing on increasing enrollment of widows, dropouts, and less privileged women in mass literacy education.
The government is achieving this by giving women a ‘second chance education’ under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment, (AGILE) project.
AGILE Project is a World Bank-assisted project of the Federal Ministry of Education geared at improving secondary education opportunities for adolescent girls aged between 10 and 20.
The Kano State Government is determined to make it a reality by collaborating with the Federal Government and the World Bank.
The Kano State Second Chance Component AGILE, led by the Team lead Hajiya Jamila Ibrahim, paid advocacy visits to the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education as well as the Kano State Agency for Mass Education.
While interacting with the leadership of the centres, Hajiya Jamila Ibrahim told them that, Kano State Second Chance Component of AGILE, is committed to the advancement of literacy education of women who lost their first chance Education opportunities due to either early marriage and poverty or any other reason.
She said, “the aim was to ensure enrollment of widows, and female dropouts and ensure empowerment of women.”
She explained that the team needs the cooperation of the Institutions to expand the various opportunities in Second chance Education.
She said, “the project will inculcate in them business digital training for the adults.”
Also Speaking, the Co-chair of the Kano State Accountability Forum on Education K-SAFE Auwalu Halilu said, the second chance Education component is designed to ensure out-of-school adults are returned to classes.
He noted that the project also aimed at ensuring the retention of the learners in the schools to instill in them the interest of learning.
He said, “we will leverage on the existing centres of Mass Literacy Education facilities with a possibility to build the capacity of staff and train learners on vocational skills.”
The Centre Secretary of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education Kano State Hajiya Maimuna Ibrahim Yahya and Executive Secretary Kano State Agency for Mass Education Sirajo Alkali both expressed satisfaction with the visits and assured continued cooperation for the success of the AGILE second chance Education project.
They informed the team of the efforts of the adult literacy centres in teaching and learning adults as well as programmes being run in the centres.
