A woman in Kano State, Northwest Nigeria, has embarked on a mission to harness the power of social media to inspire Muslims to embrace the reading of the Holy Quran.
The convener, Marya Shettima, who has been utilising digital platforms as her primary tool, explained that the initiative was designed to provide a guide to cleaner and more purposeful online engagement.
According to her, the project is aimed at uniting faith and culture through the Quran, while also encouraging Muslims, especially the youth, to spend more time connecting with the Holy Book rather than yielding to negative online distractions.

Through consistent reading and recording of Quranic verses on her platforms, Shettima has built an online community where followers from across the country participate in recitations, reflections, and discussions.
To further strengthen the movement, a grand reception was held in Kano to honour winners of a Quran reading and recitation challenge organised under the initiative.
Shettima expressed optimism that, with growing participation, the programme would inspire a new wave of faith-driven digital engagement across the state and beyond.
She said; “We live in an age where digital platforms often amplify noise, discord, and distractions. But rather than abandon these spaces, I asked myself: Why not reclaim them? Why not transform TikTok and Instagram from playgrounds of frivolity into platforms of faith, beauty, and reflection?
#ReciteWithShetty became that answer. It was never just about competition; it was about rekindling love for the Qur’an, giving our youth a noble purpose in their online engagements, and reminding them that their voices can be instruments of light in a digital world often clouded with shadows.”
Also speaking, the Kano State Commissioner for Environment, Dahiru Hashim, underscored the positive impact of social media in improving learning and promoting businesses.
Hashim encouraged the convener to uphold the initiative in changing society for the better.
Nuraddeen Mua’zu from the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, who emerged overall winner, received a cheque of N1 million, Muhammad Idris from Bauchi State received N500,000, while Aisha Ibrahim from Jigawa received N250,000. The winners expressed joy over the gesture.
Islamic scholars at the event commended Shettima for the initiative and urged her to sustain the virtue.
