The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kano State Chapter, has emphasised that including women in decision-making processes is essential to achieving meaningful societal transformation.

At a one-day capacity-building workshop held at the NUJ Press Centre in Kano, NAWOJ Chairperson, Comrade Bahijja Kabara stressed that; “Women must be given the right to contribute to policies and initiatives that drive progress.”

Organised in collaboration with the Aminu Magashi Foundation and the Community Health and Research Initiative, the workshop aimed to enhance the skills of women journalists in objective, timely reporting, while tackling the unique challenges women face both locally and globally.

Kabara urged participants to leverage the knowledge gained to advance their profession and promote the interests of women, stating, “This knowledge should empower you to promote both your careers and the interests of women everywhere.”

She commended the Aminu Magashi Foundation for its unwavering dedication to maternal and child health, community welfare, and women’s empowerment, describing it as “a dependable partner in building healthier and more inclusive communities.” The Chairperson explained.

Kabara also lauded NUJ Kano Council Chairman Comrade Sulaiman Abdullahi Dederi for his progressive leadership and praised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for “prioritising women’s development, particularly through the Maternal and Child Health Care Law and free medical services for pregnant women.”

Resource persons, including Comrade Uba Abdullahi, Malam Lawan Isah Bagwai, and veteran journalist Hajiya Salma Yusuf, led sessions on ethical journalism, credible news sourcing, and increasing women’s participation in governance.

The workshop concluded with a question-and-answer session.
