Katsina State Commits To Combat Gender-Based Violence

Katsina State Government has vowed to address issues of gender-based violence in the state.

The Special Adviser, Department of Girl Child Education and Child Development, Hajiya Jamila Abdu Mani, disclosed this while speaking at a one-day sensitisation campaign commemorating the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence held at Government Pilot Junior Secondary School, Muhammadu Buhari, in Daura.

The sensitisation campaign was organised by the Institute of Human Virology of Nigeria in collaboration with the Department of Girl-Child Education and Child Development in the State.

The Special adviser, who was represented by the permanent secretary of the department, Alh Aminu Badru, also stated that the initiative by the government would be through proper sensitisation in media and public gatherings.

According to her, the establishment of a Sexual Assault Referral Center in the State, which offers medical, psychological, and legal support to the survivors, was one of the key strategic means of eliminating the gender-based violence issues in the State.

Earlier in his remarks, the Executive Director of Community Information Awareness Initiative (CIAI), Mr. Aaron Jacob, expressed his appreciation to the State Government for the collaborations.

He then called on all the stakeholders for the sustainability of the initiative.

The sensitisation campaign featured 3 speakers, the Director of Planning Research and Statistics of the Department of Girl Child, Haj Zainab Abdulkarim, Hajiya Nafisa Umar, and Haj Farida, on the importance of girl child education, women in society, and gender-based violence.
