The Katsina State Development Management Board (KTDMB) recently organized a capacity-building training for media practitioners on Communication for Development.

The training, which took place in Katsina, brought together Public Relations Officers (PROs), Assistant Public Relations Officers (APROs) from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, as well as working journalists from the state.

In his welcome address, the Executive Secretary of KTDMB, Malam Mustapha Shehu, explained that the training aimed to equip media practitioners with the necessary knowledge on Communication for Development.

He emphasised that the training was designed to enhance the participants’ understanding of information dissemination as a key tool for development in both the state and the country.

Shehu highlighted the importance of the media’s role in building ethical communication practices.

He stated that participants would learn how to improve their skills in the digital age while maintaining the ethics of the media profession.

Shehu also noted that through interactions with experienced media practitioners, the attendees would gain valuable insights on improving their work in their respective organisations.

“We are here to share ideas, learn from each other, and build our capacity together,” Shehu said.

He emphasised the importance of truthful communication, stating that when communicating for development, the focus should be on the impact of the story rather than just the event itself.

He added that the training was also designed to prepare participants for future succession, ensuring that successors would be ready to step into roles and continue the work seamlessly.

The Executive Secretary also stressed the media’s crucial role in peacebuilding and national development. He encouraged participants to embrace information technology in their work, particularly to boost economic development and address the needs of the youth in society.

During the training, participants were exposed to four key topics: Communication for Development, Communication for Behavioral Change, Social Media for Development, and Ethical and Responsible Communication for Development, all aimed at improving the participants’ skills.

In his closing remarks, the Director of Information at the Ministry of Information, Katsina State, Tukur Hassan Dan’Ali, and Chairman of the Katsina State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), thanked the Katsina State Development Board for organising the training.

He also expressed gratitude to Governor Malam Dikko Radda for his continued support of the media in the state.
