Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has assured that his administration will provide necessary support to sustain the Annual Gwandu Horse Racing and Cultural Festival.

The Governor made this pledge at the grand finale of the maiden edition of the festival, held in Birnin Kebbi. The festival, which featured over 200 horses from seven countries, including Nigeria, was a huge success.

A Sudanese-bred horse nicknamed “Milatao” emerged victorious, outrunning 13 other horses to claim the Vice President Kashim Shettima’s Cup. The grand prize included a brand-new motor car and N50,000 cash.

The Governor emphasised the importance of preserving traditional values and promoting unity, social cohesion and economic prosperity. He was joined by other notable leaders, including the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar and the Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu.

The Emir of Gwandu, Muhammad Iliyasu Bashar, expressed his gratitude to the Kebbi State Government and other dignitaries for their support in making the festival a success.

The festival featured several exciting horse racing events, including the Kebbi Governor’s Cup, won by a Kano-bred horse nicknamed “Prince” and the Sokoto Governor’s Cup, won by “Gamzaki” from the Governor’s stable. Other notable winners included “Sakatariya,” which won the Sultan’s Cup, and the Classic Cup of Abdullahi Fodio.
