Kebbi State denies illegal mining allegations

The Kebbi State Government in North West Nigeria,has denied involvement in illegal mining activities in Libata village, Ngaski Local Government area of the State.

The Commissioner of Solid Minerals Development and Mining, Haliru Muhammad Wasagu, made this clarification at a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi.

He added that since the inception of Governor Nasir Idris’ administration, the mining sector has undergone significant reforms, ensuring companies adhere to strict rules and regulations .

Wasagu emphasized that the Federal Government solely issues mining licenses as solid minerals fall under the Exclusive Legislative List.

He said the kebbi state government has suspended illegal mining activities efforts to address security security issues across the State.

“This decision was also prompted by the lack of corporate social responsibility, community development projects, and ecological taxes from mining operators”.

He further said already about seven mining companies have been cleared to operate in the Libata area, with stringent protocols in place to ensure compliance.

“These companies must register with the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and Mining and obtain necessary permits”.

Regarding the conflict in Libata, Ngaski Local Government, Wasagu explained that Three Crowns Company was issued a license for 5.4 square kilometers, with a portion allocated to El-Tahdam Exploration Limited.

Both companies have completed registration and licensing processes at the state and federal levels.
