The Kebbi State Government has announced preparations for the 2026 Yauri Rigata and Cultural Festival, scheduled to take place from 4 to 7 February in Yelwan-Yauri.

The National Chairman, Ya’uri Rigaka and Culture Festival and Secretary to Kebbi State Government, Yakubu Tafiya stated this during a press briefing marking the beginning of activities for the fifth edition of the “RIGATA” annual festival.

He said “Rigata”, a centuries-old cultural event of the Gungu people, derives its name from a Gunganci word meaning “marine war.”

Yakubu Tafida said historically, the festival began over 200 years ago as a display of naval strength, involving riverine manoeuvres, canoe racing, and combat skills used in confronting dangerous hippopotamuses along the River Niger.

The National Chairman Ya’uri Rigaka and Cultural Festival, Alhaji Yakubu Tafida say the festival was traditionally used to train young Gungu warriors in canoe paddling and naval warfare and has since evolved into a major cultural and tourism event.

This year’s edition will feature a trade fair, agricultural exhibition, cultural performances, water sports, and the Rigata main event, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Yauri Emirate.

He said Kebbi State Government is supporting the festival as part of efforts to promote culture, tourism, and economic activities in the state.

The 2026 Yauri Rigata and Cultural Festival will run until Saturday, 7 February.
