Ismail Umar, Kebbi
The Kebbi State government has reiterated more commitments to increase women’s participation in governance, to realise their potential and continue to deliver meaningful development in the society.
The Kebbi State Governor, Senator Atiku Bagudu, stated this while declaring open the regional conference of women in surveying organised by Northern Women in Surveying in partnership with the State government.
Represented by the Secretary to the State government, Babale Yauri, Bagudu said the present administration has remained committed to involving women in decision making in all aspects of human endeavour.
According to him, the State government has also provided them with an enabling environment to make meaningful contributions to the growth and development of society.
While commending the association for organising the conference, he said Kebbi State was ready to support any profession desirous of bringing development to people and the nation.
In a statement by Bagudu’s Special Adviser on Media, Yahaya Sarki, he lamented the limited number of females in Surveying, urging them to key into the profession.
“The State government is committed to sensitising youths, particularly the Girl Child, to study survey and Geo-informatics at the early stage of their lives,” he said.
The Governor promised to employ the surveyors who have completed their studies and seek employment.
In his keynote address, the Surveyor-General of the Federation, Dr Abduganiyu Adeyemi -Adebomehin, identified youth empowerment as a critical element towards ensuring a crime-free society.
The Surveyor-General, who Alhaji Shehu Rufa’i represented, said: “Women, as we are aware, are mothers of the society, their empowerment is key to driving a crime-free society; hence, the theme of this seminar is central at this challenging period in our country.
” Various professions are into this advocacy of women empowerment, and yours cannot be out of place. This seminar will certainly redirect the concept of our women in terms of the profession of Surveying and Geo-informatics.”
He lauded the high record of achievements by WIS executives through advocacy, enlightening women on economic reliance, reliability and confidence in geospatial solutions as an empowerment possibility for women and girls in today’s Nigerian economy.
The Surveyor-General assured the Surveyors of necessary support under his watch. The National Coordinator, Survey, Mrs Olokeogun Damilola, appreciated the Kebbi State Governor and Surveyor-General of the State for their doggedness and generosity in accepting to host the event.
” There is no doubt that the lecture will add to our knowledge base and give us an edge in pursuing our surveying career,” she said.
Earlier, the Surveyor-General, Kebbi State, Kabiru Argungu, described WIS as a substantially collective body of opinion within the Surveyors Council concerned with members’ aspirations.
He observed that the greatness of a nation was directly propositional to the level of mapping the nation had achieved, adding that no meaningful development in whatever form could take place without surveying and mapping.
“There are a lot of demands for our products today in Nigeria more than ever before as the economy is being diversified.
” There is also a strong commitment to increase and improve infrastructure by the state government of the day and private organisation,” he said.
He explained that the decision of the chairperson of the women’s wing to organise the retreat was well-timed, adding that it would enable the august body to add its collective contribution towards the desired Surveyors Council.
The conference organised by Women-In Surveying (WIS) was themed, “Geospatial Solution as an Empowerment for Women and Girls in Today’s Nigerian Economy’.
