The Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kogi State Chapter, Comrade Stella Edoka, has urged stakeholders to take concrete steps in empowering survivors of gender-based violence.

Edoka emphasised that such empowerment would enable survivors to reclaim their voices and actively contribute to their communities.

She made the call while addressing members of the association and other women who embarked on a walk and campaign against gender-based violence as part of activities to mark ‘Sixteen Days of Activism’ to stop violence against women.

The NAWOJ Chair emphasised the need to break the culture of silence that has become a norm in society. According to her, keeping quiet about heartbreaking situations has dire consequences; it often takes a toll on the survivor’s mental health.

“I am concerned about the persistent prevalence of violence against women and girls. It is one of the most widespread violations of human rights. Women should be protected and not violated,” she said.

Taking awareness campaigns to the grassroots communities will make a lot of difference, the chairperson’s perspective is capable of putting perpetrators on hot coals and in serious discomfort.

She also noted that such acts are more frequently committed in hard-to-reach communities.

’16 Days of Activism’ is marked to assert the critical need for women to understand their rights and to stop all forms of gender-based violence, which has eaten deep into the fabric of societies.
