Kwara State House of Assembly has urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to direct the Ministry of Health to regulate the practice of Traditional Medicine in the state.
The call was sequel to the motion on the ‘Need to Enforce Regulation of the Activities of Traditional Medicine Practitioners in Line with the Kwara State Traditional Medicine and Registration Law 2006′ sponsored by the member representing Ilorin Central and Leader of the House, Oba Abdulkadir Magaji at the plenary.
Oba Magaji, while leading the debate on the motion, said the development would encourage them to practice in accordance with the provisions of the Kwara State Traditional Medicine and Registration Law 2006.
He expressed concern that the existing law that regulates and standardize the Traditional Medicine Practitioners’ activities is abused, thereby posing health risks to the citizens.
Other co-sponsors, in their debates, advised Nigerians, particularly Kwarans, to always patronise and purchase only traditional medicine that are approved by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
Reading the resolutions, the Speaker, Engineer Yakubu Danladi Salihu urged the State Commissioner for Health to ensure regular training and sensitization of the Traditional Medicine Practitioners to operate within the provisions of the law.
The Speaker also called for proper prosecution of any Traditional Medicine Practitioners found to contravene any provision of the law.
