To prevent transmission of rabies through bites from rabid animals such as dog and cat, the Kwara State Government has flagged off the 2022 statewide Anti Rabies Mass Vaccination Campaign Exercise.

The Deputy Governor of the state, Mr. Kayode Alabi, who flagged off the exercise at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) Headquarters in Ilorin, said the government was committed to the wellbeing of the people and livestock in the state.

Also, Alabi informed that the State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has approved the release of funds to commence the exercise, stressing that it was part of the present administration’s efforts to eradicate incidence of rabies through dogs and cat bites in the state.

Represented by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Raji Razaq , the deputy governor further noted that the State Government was investing heavily on both human and animal health to have a safe and healthy society.

He said, “Without this anti rabies mass vaccination, there is no way we can have a good and healthy environment if our pets are at risk, as we know the case fatality rate of rabies that are symptomatic is close to hundred per cent as a result of cat and dog bites.”

According to him, if society can tackle the issue of viruses in dogs and cats, less would be done in taking care of humans with regards to rabies virus. The deputy governor, therefore, appealed for strong support from stakeholders to end transmission of rabies through regular vaccination, and to have a safe environment and a balanced ecosystem in the state.
