A philanthropist and a Social Entrepreneur in Kwara State, North Central Nigeria, Alhaji Yakubu Gobir, Waziri Hausa, who recently decamped to the Young Progressives Party (YPP) from the All Progressives Congress (APC), has declared to run for governorship under the party.
Alhaji Gobir, a governorship aspirant under the APC during the 2019 elections, made the declaration on Wednesday at a press conference held at the party’s secretariat in Ilorin, the state capital.
According to him, he was overwhelmed as he stood before the people of Kwara State to herald what he was convinced was the beginning of a new chapter in Kwara’s history.
“For too long, Kwara State, like most of Nigeria, has wallowed in abject poverty and insecurity, while a very few corner the commonwealth and hold the rest hostage.
“As most of you are aware, I was a key player in the 2019 elections that ushered in the current APC government at both state and federal levels.
“Yet, I must confess, I have become disillusioned with Nigeria’s leadership process,” the aspirant lamented.
Waziri Gobir, who is also the Madawaki of Ilorin, pointed out that Kwara State has never been more divided than it is at this very moment.
Ethno-political conflict, social decay, and squandered resources have widened the gap between the haves and have-nots, fuelling resentment and a glaring economic divide.
He explained to the newsmen further that after deep reflection, prayers, and consultations, he has offered himself in service to the good people of Kwara by vying for the office of Governor of Kwara State on this great platform of the Young Progressives Party (YPP).
“It is a need to be on the right side of history that explains my decision to leave the APC and to deploy all my resources and God-given talent to build a platform for young men and women to express themselves, vote, and be voted for, and take charge of their destiny. That platform is the Young Progressives Party.
“Gubernatorial elections in March 2023 will be a referendum on the current administration of this state.
Anybody relying on ‘Federal might’ to impose an unwanted candidate on the people should perish the thought. We will not stand for it,” he declared.
It has become clear that the 2023 elections in Kwara will not be about which political party you belong to but about our collective ideas and values and which individual the people believe can deliver those ideas.
All those vast in history know that the Gobir’s name stands for three things: -Courage, Competence, and Compassion.
We always stay the course until victory is achieved. This is not a journey that started yesterday. This is about making a difference that matters, a difference that will transcend time.
I consider myself a social entrepreneur, vested in eradicating the critical issues of poverty and unemployment plaguing my people.
I have tried my best with the Gobir Foundation to address these concerns. At the Foundation, we have empowered tens of thousands of Kwarans comprising women, school children, farmers, and young people.
Most Kwara population are young people in their prime, starting in life with big dreams and hope for their futures.
He reminded the people of Kwara state, specifically the youths, that they still had 30 days left to get their PVC, which he described as their weapons in the battle ahead.
“Come Saturday, June 4, 2022, which is the date for the primary election of our party.
“Let us take the first step together on this road to recovery. My name is Yakubu Gobir and with your support, I wish to stand for nomination as the gubernatorial candidate of the Young Progressives Party, YPP which has as it’s slogan, Service To The People,” the aspirant declared.
