The Labour Party Caucus, Anambra State House of Assembly has dissociated itself from some sections of the Anambra State Local Government Administration Bill 2024 passed into law by the State Assembly.

According to the Caucus, sections 13,14 and 16 of the bill seek to compel the local governments to pay their Federal Allocation into an account to be established by the state government.

Briefing newsmen shortly after the Assembly sitting in Awka, Spokesman of the caucus, Hon Jude Umennajiego, noted that the Supreme Court had made far reaching decisions on the funds and autonomy of local government as a third tier.

The Lawmaker who represents Onitsha South 2, faulted  the State House of Assembly for attempting to make laws seeking to compel the local governments to pay allocations to the state.

Now,we the Labour Party Caucus in the House of Assembly want to state categorically that as far as sections 13,14 and 16 of this Anambra State law is concerned,we are not party to it and do not agree that money which is directly paid to the local governments will be sent back to the state government under any guise.

“We stand by the decision of the Supreme Court, the highest court in the land on the autonomy of local government and the management of their funds. We therefore stand with the overwhelming majority of Anambra people in upholding the constitution and the Supreme Court decision.”

The news briefing was attended by seven out of eight.
