Despite the new Akurba Power station in Nasarawa state, Residents of Ungwar Yazawa community in Lafia Local Government Area of the State has stormed Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) Head Office in Lafia to protest what they call perennial power outage in the area.
Spokesperson of the community, Shuibu Zanwa-Buba, told journalists during the protest that they had been without electricity supply for over eight months.
He said the protest became necessary because the AEDC has not shown commitment towards addressing their plight.
AEDC has refused to connect us
Zanwa-Buba said that the electricity transformer in the area spoilt about eight months ago after which the community approached the Nasarawa State Government for assistance and they eventually got a new one.
“When the transformer got bad, we wrote to Governor Abdullahi Sule and he graciously approved and released the electricity transformer to us for over two months now, but AEDC has refused to connect us.
“AEDC seems to be deliberately working against the interest of the community for the reasons best known to it,” he said.
He appealed to Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to call AEDC to order considering the untold hardship the people of the community had been passing through.
AEDC Manager, Human Resources, Mrs Zainab Ibrahim, appealed for calm and promised that the transformer would be powered soon.
