Lagos Butchers Seek Accelerated Work On Eko Ranch Project
The Lagos State Butchers’ Association has appealed to the state government to expedite action on the Eko Ranch project designed to promote local cattle rearing, reduce reliance on imports and enhance food security.
The association’s Patron, Alhaji Bamidele Kazeem, made the plea in an interview on Tuesday in Lagos.
Kazeem described the project as part of the state’s efforts to revamp the red meat value chain, ensuring proper hygiene and quality control.
“The project is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s economy and the livelihoods of butchers and cattle rearers.
“The major move is to transform the cattle rearing landscape in Lagos State, providing a sustainable solution to the challenges of meat production and supply.
“The Lagos State Government (LASG) is the one responsible for the necessary facilities needed for the 750-acre ranch to start thriving,” he said.
Kazeem said the project when completed would increase the number of cows slaughtered daily, reduce transportation costs, and provide fresh meat to consumers.
“By establishing a local ranch, Lagos State will substantially decrease its dependence on cattle imports from countries such as Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, and Northern Nigeria, resulting in reduced transportation costs and enhanced efficiency.
“The ranch, which is located at Gbodu community Epe, will enable Lagos State to partake in animal rearing so as to reduce the present price hikes and make Lagosians know the history of the meat they are consuming,”he said.
He added that the project would create jobs, stimulate local economic growth, and enhance food security.
“The gains of the ranch are enormous. It will provide job opportunities for our teeming youths and probably bring down the cost of the meat.
“It will enable Lagosians access to quality meat and create investment opportunities.
“As Lagos State continues to explore innovative solutions to its development challenges, the Eko Ranch project is ready to make a significant impact,” he said.
He, however, commended the Federal Government for the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development to oversee animal rearing to in line with global standards.
Kazeem noted that the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the LASG had provided valuable support to ranch investors by organising training sessions on best practices for animal rearing.
“We anticipate continuous support from both state and federal governments to further enhance the livestock industry.”
