Lagos International Polo Tournament Kicks Off January 23rd

The Lagos polo Tournament will kick off on January 23 with Some of the best polo players from across the world set to vie for honors in four major competitions and six subsidiary laurels.

It is the 120th edition of the competition which yearly gathers the world’s best stars in a display of horsemanship and culture at the country’s number one polo ground.

According to the organizers of the competition, this year’s event is unique in the sense that for the first time in over a century of rich history, the prestigious Lagos polo festival would be decided over four weeks of high-octane polo showpiece, making the event the biggest polo tournament in Africa.

Over 30 teams fortified with awesome horsepower and top players across the world have been confirmed to vie for top honors in the month-long prestigious polo fiesta that prides itself as the first polo tournament in the country, dating back to the early 1900s.

According to the organisers, the prizes on offer are the biggest of them all, the Majekodunmi Cup, the Open Cup, the Lagos Cup, the Silver Cup, and a handful of subsidiary prizes.

The subsidiary prizes include the Oba of Lagos Cup, the Governor’s Cup, the Adedapo Ojora Memorial Cup, the Sani Dangote Cup, the Italian Ambassador’s Cup, and the Independence Cup. There are also the Lagos Heritage Cup, Chief of Naval Staff Cup, and the Independence Cup, among others.

The Open Cup will kick off the show on January 23 and end on January 28, with the Majekodunmi Cup taking center stage in the second week from January 30 to February 4, 2024, while the third week will see teams vying for the Low Cup going at it from February 6 to 11, 2024.

The last week of the tournament will see teams vying for honors in the Silver Cup from February 13 to 18, 2024.

Tournament Manager, Olumayowa Ogunnusi, who commended the main sponsor, GTCO, and other supporters for their contributions to the growth of the sport, stated that having gained a reputation as one of the biggest polo tournaments in Africa, the Lagos Polo Club looks forward to delivering great values for the sponsors and participants during the fiesta.
