The National Population Commission (NPC) in collaboration with the World Bank is holding a capacity-building workshop in Lagos State for Nigerian Journalists
The Chairman of the National Population Commission, Mr Isa Kwarra who was represented by the Chairman population Management Committee of the NPC, Abdulmalik Durunkwa explained that the workshop aims to develop and improve the capacity of selected Journalists reporting on Demographic Dividend.
“This provides an opportunity for the journalists to acquire knowledge and skills that will upgrade their competence and value for the investment made and will in turn achieve the purpose of advancing the implementation of the Demographic Dividend agenda in Nigeria through effective engagements of people, policies and for actions.
“To have a special Squad of Journalists with skills for developing and using human-angle stories to accelerate progress towards achieving a significant demographic transition and building an enlightened society that embraces and supports harnessing Demographic Dividend.
“Nigeria was among the first few member states of the African Union that responded with the launch of its Demographic Dividend Roadmap in 2017.”
He further explained that “Harnessing Demographic Dividend, starts with creating a well-informed and knowledgeable society on the processes, roles, responsibilities and benefits that may accrue if a dividend is achieved.
“Practical evidence and what-has-worked places the responsibility on the media to adequately informed the various segments of the society with consistent engagements.
“To position, the media of various platforms to undertake this responsibility expertly requires upgrading their knowledge with different innovative writings and presentation skills that fit and will aptly catch the attention of targeted audiences
“The convening of this very important and first of its kind workshop focused on Demographic Dividend is a response to that quest. National Population Commission, celebrates this milestone”
The NPC Chairman appreciated the World Bank’s support under the leadership of Shubham Chaudhuri, the Country Director as well as other partners.
