Lagos State has formally submitted its bid to host the 2026 edition of the National Youth Games, signaling its ambition to bring the prestigious event to Nigeria’s most populous and economically vibrant city.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed the state’s expression of interest, highlighting Lagos’ readiness to welcome athletes from across Nigeria. In the bid statement, the Lagos delegation emphasized the state’s role as Nigeria’s economic and cultural hub and its long-standing dedication to nurturing young talent.
‘Lagos is not just Nigeria’s heartbeat in commerce and culture; it’s a powerhouse of sporting ambition,’ the statement declared. ‘With elite venues like Teslim Balogun Stadium, Mobolaji Johnson Arena, and Rowe Park, along with robust infrastructure and hospitality options, the state is well-equipped to host a world-class sporting event.’
The bid was presented by a high-powered Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) team led by Director General Hon. Lekan Fatodu. He was accompanied by key sports development officials, including Mr. Nunayon Olumide Travih, Dr. (Mrs.) Oluyomi Oluwasanmi, and Mr. Dare Orimoloye.
The National Youth Games serve as a breeding ground for future sports stars, offering a national platform for identifying and developing young athletic talent. In the most recent edition in 2024, Team Delta topped the medal table with 111 medals—including 46 gold—securing the championship title in Asaba, Delta State.
