Nigeria’s commitment to green and sustainable urban transport has received a major boost with the planned launch of the Omi Eko Project by the Lagos State Government on Friday.
The initiative, driven by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), aligns with the Nigerian Government’s broader agenda on climate action, clean energy adoption, and modern infrastructure development.
The Omi Eko Project is designed to transform water transportation in Lagos—the nation’s economic hub, through the deployment of 78 high-capacity electric ferries, digital ticketing systems, upgraded terminals, and advanced safety technologies.
The launch event, scheduled for the Five Cowries Terminal in Falomo, will be led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and attended by top government officials, development partners, and private sector stakeholders.
According to LASWA, “the project will reduce road congestion, cut carbon emissions, and create a safer, faster, and more efficient means of commuting for millions of Lagos residents.”
Officials say “the initiative also demonstrates Nigeria’s readiness to embrace innovative, climate-smart transport systems in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to environmental preservation.”
The Five Cowries Terminal, a major intermodal transport hub connecting land and water routes, has been chosen as the launch site to symbolise Lagos’ commitment to integrated urban mobility and economic diversification.
The Lagos State Government said; “the Omi Eko Project will serve as a model for other coastal states across Nigeria to adopt renewable and technology-driven solutions for mass transit.”
