Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum Concludes with Key Resolutions

The 5th edition of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum concluded on January 31, marking the end of a three-day deliberation focused on regional stability and development.

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, the chief host, expressed gratitude to the participating governors, international partners, and stakeholders for their contributions. He also extended special appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership in fostering peace, security, and development in the region.

Long-term Stability

Highlighting the forum’s theme, “Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security, and Sustainable Development for a Resilient Community,” Governor Buni urged stakeholders to implement actionable steps toward long-term stability and progress.

As the newly appointed Chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum, he pledged to work diligently with his counterparts and development partners to achieve the forum’s objectives. He also acknowledged the efforts of the outgoing Chairperson, Governor Ildjima Abdraman of Hadjer-Lamis Province, Chad.

Governor Buni expressed optimism about sustained collaboration and resource mobilisation for the region’s development. He thanked all delegates for their support and wished them safe travels.

Key Resolutions and Commitments

Following the forum’s discussions, a communiqué was issued outlining the following resolutions:

  1. Security and Stability
  • Strengthen the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to combat Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other security threats.
  • Secure Lake Chad Islands and waterways to curb militant activities.
  • Intensify efforts against illicit arms trade and drug trafficking.
  1. Rehabilitation and Development
  • Support reintegration programs for ex-Boko Haram and ISWAP members.
  • Enhance climate resilience initiatives to restore the Lake Chad ecosystem.
  • Invest in cross-border trade, infrastructure, and free trade zones.
  1. Governance and Social Development
  • Strengthen the role of traditional and religious leaders in peacebuilding.
  • Prioritize women and youth engagement in stabilization efforts.
  • Mobilize funding through the Special Multi-Partner Delivery Fund (SMDF) and Nexus Funding Facility (NFF).
  1. International Partnerships and Advocacy
  • Urge donors to continue supporting stabilization programs, particularly in Niger.
  • Call for the endorsement of the adjusted Regional Strategy for Stabilization, Recovery, and Resilience (RS SRR).

Acknowledgments and Future Plans

The forum commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian government, and Governor Mai Mala Buni for hosting the event. It also recognized the leadership of the outgoing Chairperson, Governor Ildjima Abdraman, and welcomed Governor Buni as the new Chair.

The next Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum will be held in Niger in 2026.
