About thirty community schools have received free educational support materials for distribution to pupils and students in three council areas within the central district of Cross River State, southern Nigeria.
The educational support materials, which have been distributed to selected community schools in Abi, Obubra and Yakurr local government areas, were donated by the senator representing the Central Senatorial District, Senator Eteng Williams.
Senator Williams said that the free educational materials provided was part of his Education Support Programme to encourage children and adolescents at the grassroots to imbibe good study habits and enhance enrollment in primary and secondary schools.
Williams, who spoke through the former council chairman of Ikom local government area, Mr. Ayiba Ojong Ayiba, underscored the importance of education,
“It gives me great pleasure to support the yearnings and aspirations of our children to acquire knowledge and compete favourably with their peers globally.
“As a grassroots person, who understands the importance of education for the transformation of an individual and community at large, it is only fitting that I give my modest support to our children, teachers and schools,” the senator said.
While pledging profound commitment to the educational upliftment of his constituents in the central senatorial district, the senator urged the local governments authorities, head teachers and principals to ensure that every child benefits from this first phase.
He promised that more schools including students in tertiary institutions would be provided educational support materials during subsequent distribution exercises within the senatorial district.
Responding to the gesture, the Education Supervisor for Abi council, Mr. Wilfred Inah expressed gratitude to Senator Williams for his unwavering dedication to education and assured that the resources would be equitably distributed among the intended beneficiaries.
The case was not different at Yakurr and Obubra local government areas, where the Supervisors for Education, Mr. Godwin Thomas and Mr. Onyam Egbe respectively appreciated the lawmaker for the gesture, which they agreed would enhance enrollment in schools.
Thomas said, “these materials would go a long way to enable parents enroll their children in schools. With the rising cost of essential items, these materials are coming to the children at the right time because schools have resumed and many have been given encouragement and hope to return to school.”
On his part, Egbe said, “this is a beautiful thing. We are proud of Senator Williams. He has continued to redeem his promise to his constituents and this time around, he has decided to extend his benevolence to the children. We really appreciate him for performing well.”
Items donated to the school’s under the Senator Eteng Williams Educational Support Initiative included hundreds of school bags, more than 10 thousands exercise books, calculators, mathematical sets and more.
