Lawmakers react to 2023 budget

Nigerian lawmakers have reacted to the 2023 budget proposal presented by President Muhamadu Buhari.

They commended the president for the timely presentation of the budget.

 

The Nigerian Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, says the Nigerian economy is still challenged by a dearth of revenue as the main source of revenue to the Nigerian Government remains Oil and Gas.

 

“The large-scale and massive stealing of our Oil, is concerning, as this reduces drastically the revenues available to the Government” he said.

 

For her part,.Senator Uche Ekumife, described the budget presentation as great.

 

She however said that the president can not tell the lawmakers not to touch the budget as ” we are not rubber-stamp lawmakers”

 

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, says the budget must be made to work for the people.

 

He however advised the government to clamp down on oil thieves as they sabotage the economy of Nigeria.

 

For Hon. Bashir Bichi, the senate would work towards quick passage of the budget.

 

He said that being the last budget of the Buhari administration, there was the need to make sure that it completes most of the projects of the administration.

 

Similarly, Hon Benjamin Kalu said that due diligence would be followed during budget defense by government agencies.

He said that the House would intensify effort to make sure that all agencies of government come to defend their budgets without excuses.
