Lazio Goalkeeper Provedel Rescues Point Against Atletico Madrid
Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel became the first goalkeeper to score in a UEFA Champions League match since Nigeria’s Vincent Enyeama, after rescuing a point for his side in their 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in closing moments of their Group E encounter.
Atletico Madrid took the lead through Pablo Barrios in the 29th minute and looked to hold off pressure from Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy.
Then Five minutes into stoppage time, Provedel ran up the pitch for a last-minute corner and headed home a cross from Luis Alberto with one of the final touches of the game.
The goal sent the fans in the stadium into a frenzy as the goalkeeper secured a vital point for Lazio in a tough Group E. The Italian shot-stopper headed in the equaliser to give his team a 1-1 draw against a resilient Atletico Madrid side.
Provedel became the first goalkeeper to score in a UEFA Champions League match since Nigeria’s Vincent Enyeama achieved the feat for Hapoel Tel Aviv 13 years ago and only the fourth overall. Enyeama scored a penalty for Hapoel Tel-Aviv against Lyon.
Provedel’s goal was the sixth by a goalkeeper in the UEFA Champions League and only the second from open play, after Sinan Bolat scored for Standard Liege against AZ Alkmaar in 2009.
Bolat also scored a 95th-minute equaliser in the encounter.
