Leadership is Key in Democracy -Senator Sunday Katung

A senator from Northern, Nigeria, Senator Sunday Katung of Southern, Kaduna said good leadership is very important in a democratic system of government.

He said the Bayelsa State and the whole Ijaw nation require good leadership the kind that governor Douye Diri has been providing since he came into office. This is because leadership is about service to the people.

Katung made the statement during the Douye Diri Peace Prize and leadership lecture/Book presentation at the Pee’s Hub event centre at Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

He went further to praise Governor Diri for the good work he has done in the state in term of development, “for there to be development, there will be infrastructure, education, health care delivery, power, human capital development, youth and women empowerment among others. Governor Diri has done well in these area technical vocational training, educational, training, science, engeering, and mathematics at the primary and terriary levels.”

He also stated that, ” Governor Diri should create more ways to his administration, his vision of partnership across the Niger Delta and beyond. There is nothing wrong if the government of Bayelsa State establishes floor mill, Soya oil refinery or Ginger exporting company in Bayelsa State and we collaborating with the Bayelsa State government“.

Katung also said that the serious investment must be done in the area of culture, tourism, sports and arts exhibitions among others

Government should encourage scholarship in order to transform the young people.

Good leadership

The head of traditional rulers, Bayelsa State, Southern, Nigeria and also one of the guest speakers, HRM King Bubaraye Dakolo, stressed the important of a good leadership.

 

According to him, ” we must have the right leadership style and stand by the interest of the people. We need to change for the better”.

We must learn our language,  know our values inspire our people, we must bring possible impact to our families and the Ijaw nation, ” he said.

He also mentioned some Ijaw leaders that have occupied global space such as the former president of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, one of Nigeria popular musicians, popularly known as Timaya and the President of Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), and also the Bayelsa State, Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Dr. Daniel Igali among others.

Create a nation

Another guest speaker, Honorable Kingsley July, advised the Bayelsa State governor, Douye Diri, to look beyond party politics and political supporters and create a nation that will have legacy.

The former deputy governor of Bayelsa State, and also a member of the Elders Council of Bayelsa State, Rear admiral Gboribigha Jonh Jonah, stated that, the Bayelsa State Elders Council will collaborate with the government, ” on behalf of the elders council, we will collaborate with you. Silver and gold we do not have but we have knowledge, we will assist you with knowledge”.

The Bayelsa State, governor Douye Diri, was plead with the event and praised the Bayelsa State, Commissioner for education, Honorable Dr. Gentle Emelah for organizing the event.

We want a country that produces equity and justice, elections are over and it is now time for governance.

At the peak of the event was a book lunch and was unvailled by the Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri.

 

There were also presentation of awards to some politicians and there were traditional display by the Bayelsa State Council of Arts and Culture.
