The Nigerian Army has emphasised the need for strong and authentic leadership at all levels to address the complex security challenges facing the country.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Mayirenso Saraso, made this statement during a week-long ‘Operations Planning Cadre 2025’ for officers in the division’s Area of Responsibility.

Saraso, who also serves as the Commander of Sector 1, Operations Fansan Yamma Northwest, explained that the cadre is a crucial platform designed to strengthen the operational planning capabilities and enhance the leadership skills of junior commanders.

According to Saraso, the cadre aligns with the Chief of Army Staff’s command philosophy, which aims to consolidate the transformation of the Nigerian Army. The goal is to bequeath a well-motivated and combat-ready force that can effectively discharge its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment.

Saraso emphasised that the Chief of Army Staff’s command philosophy aptly captures the role of leadership at all levels of command, particularly at the junior level, in addressing the complex security challenges facing the country.

“It is the foundation for any successful military operations. Junior leaders such as platoon commanders, company commanders, and non-commissioned officers are often at the forefront of our operations,” he said.

The GOC said their ability to make sound decisions, underscore the vital role of junior commanders is key to ensuring missions’ successes and operational efficiency.

He further hinted that investing in their development was not just necessary but essential for achieving operational effectiveness.

Saraso disclosed that the cadre provided an opportunity for participants to refine their leadership and planning skills through interactive sessions, practical exercises, and shared experiences.

“As Commanders, we must be able to synchronize our efforts, share intelligence and make informed decisions in real-time,” Saraso stated.

The GOC added that the initiative was a significant step towards strengthening inter-agency cooperation and fostering a unified approach to security operations.

“The complex security challenges we face today demand strong and authentic leadership at all levels, particularly at the junior command level, where tactical decisions are made in real time.

“Your ability to lead effectively, make quick and informed decisions, and coordinate seamlessly with other security agencies is critical to achieving our collective security objectives,” the GOC concluded.
