Leverage On Research To Provide Alternative Power Sources- President Tinubu

Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerian university management to provide alternative power supply in their campuses by leveraging on research conducted.

The president advised in a message to the 39th convocation ceremony of Bayero University Kano, in North West Nigeria.

President Tinubu represented by the Minister for State Education Professor Suwaiba Ahmad believed that research conducted when properly utilized can make a significant impact in solving issues on campuses.

He said, “The government is aware of the difficulties Universities are facing in terms of increase in electricity tariffs which culminated to huge bills. We are making significant efforts to make sure that the condition stabilizes so that our universities can function optimally.

“However, while we are making these conscious efforts, I would like to employ our universities to leverage the research conducted to come up with little solutions in terms of alternative power supply.”

President Tinubu explained that the government is determined to continue to support the upgrade of university infrastructure, urging the management not to rest in their efforts in exploring opportunities to attract private sector collaborations and investments.

The president called on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to intervene in the land dispute between BUK and the neighbouring Communities as funds have been provided for the perimeter fencing of the Institution by the federal government.

The Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University Kano Professor Sangir Abbas informed the Visitor that, the Institution has graduated 8,769 from Eighteen (18) Faculties.

176 were awarded first-class degrees, 275 PhDs and 2,590 Masters degrees among others.

While urging the graduates to uphold the values of integrity the Institution was known for, Abbas expressed the determination of the University to excellence, research, innovation and Community service through its vision for transformation.

He informed the gathering that, BUK emerged as the 4th best university in Nigeria and 43rd in Africa as contained in the latest University ranking.

This the VC explained, was a result of the Institution’s commitment to its vision for excellence and research as well as the improvement of learning facilities with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and infrastructure.

Committed to actualizing the vision of the Institution, Professor Abbas said BUK, has introduced 83 new Programmes 

Tinubu’s Reforms:

The BUK VC lauded the reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu that directly impact Federal Universities such as the student loan scheme aimed at increasing enrollment and reducing the burden of parents.

Professor Abbas also commended the President for removing Universities from the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System IPPIS which according to him, restored universities’ autonomy in staff recruitment and payroll management among others.

Professor Abbas identified the cost of electricity as a major impediment affecting the running of the Institution.

Honorary Degrees were presented to retired Colonel Sani Bello and Philanthropist Alhaji Auwalu Rano also Known as AA Rano among other presentations.
