The Liberian government has announced the arrival of a massive shipment of donated rice from Japan, totaling 2,640 metric tons. This donation is part of the Japanese Grant Commodity Program, which aims to support Liberia’s socioeconomic development initiatives.
The rice, which arrived at Monrovia’s Freeport on March 28, 2025, will be distributed for commercial sale through leading rice importers Fouta Corporation, Northwest, and United Commodities Inc. The government has set wholesale and retail prices at US$15.75 and US$16.50, respectively, and urges the public to report any price gouging.
Proceeds from the rice sales will be allocated towards socio-economic projects not covered in the national budget. This donation is a testament to the strong partnership between Liberia and Japan, with the Japanese government having donated a similar consignment of rice valued at US$1.5 million in June last year.
