Manchester City won the UEFA Super Cup for the first time in its history after coming from behind in a thrilling game that ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, before beating Sevilla 5-4 on penalties at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in Piraeus, Greece.
UEFA Champions League winners City featured top striker Erling Haaland in attack, with Jack Grealish and Cole Palmer supporting on the flanks. For Europa League winners Sevilla, Morocco striker Youssef En-Nesyri started up-front while Erik Lamela and Lucas Ocampos were on the flanks.
City defender Nathan Ake and winger Jack Grealish tested Sevilla goalkeeper Bounou in the first half, but it was Sevilla who opened the scoring. Striker En-Nesyri rose highest to head in Marcos Acuna’s cross after a brilliant counter attack.
City looked for a way back into the game, but the heroics of Morocco’s shot-stopper Bounou kept the Spanish team in the encounter.

In the second half, En-Nesyri went on to be denied by City goalkeeper Ederson several times. However, Sevilla were made to pay for its wastefulness when Cole Palmer looped a header over Bounou to equalise for Manchester City.
City improved as the game headed towards full time and almost won in stoppage time when defender Nathan Ake forced a sharp save from Bounou. City pressed for a goal but the Spanish side stood firm to take the match straight to penalties.
The first nine spot-kicks of the penalty shootout were all converted but Serbian defender Nemanja Gudelj struck his spot-kick against the crossbar to hand victory to Manchester City.
Manchester City held its nerve to beat Sevilla 5-4 on penalties and win the UEFA Super Cup for the first time in its history.
Presented with the rare opportunity to claim a trophy that did not already have their name on it, City initially struggled in the encounter but rose to the occasion.
