Mauritius extends Covid-19 lockdown by one month

Mauritius has extended its lockdown for another month as the island nation continues its fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The extension of the Temporary Restriction of Movement Order, which takes effect from Thursday, April 1, was announced by Attorney General and Minister of Agro Industry and Food Security Maneesh Gobin.

Gobin noted that only some specific economic activities will be allowed to operate under strict sanitary conditions until 30 April.

During the period, public gatherings will remain prohibited and people will be required to wear face masks outside their residences.

Non-essential businesses will remain closed, including cinemas, leisure parks, amusement centres, gaming houses, casinos, sports complexes, social halls, youth centres, wedding halls, market fairs, beaches, national parks, and nature reserves.

By Thursday, the island nation with around 1.2 million people had reported 1,028 Covid-19 infections with 12 deaths.
