The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has appealed to the Gombe State Government to fill the vacuum created by retired workers, deaths, or those who have withdrawn their services, by employing additional personnel and the transfer of those working in local government areas.

The Chairman, of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Gombe State Chapter, Mr. Yusuf Aish Bello, made the call during the Workers’ Day Rally in Gombe, by urging the government to implement and address the balance of the outstanding N30,000 minimum owed, as well as the upward review of monthly pension for local government and state retirees, which he said had become necessary given the high cost of living.

He also said human resource gaps in the health sector, which came about due to the mass exodus of workers, should be filled, saying the International Workers’ Day was set aside to celebrate the numerous contributions of workers in society and at the same time look into issues affecting their welfare and work environment.

Bello appreciated the government of Gombe State for prompt payment of salaries, payment of monthly ten thousand naira palliatives to workers in the state as well as settling the bulk of gratuities to retirees up to 2018 among others.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the Gombe State Deputy Governor, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau, acknowledged the invaluable contributions of workers across the state and expressed gratitude for their dedication and hard work, highlighting their pivotal role in the socio-economic fabric of society.

He commended the cordial relations existing between the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress in the state and among the leadership of the various Trade Unions, saying this has brought peace, unity and harmony among workers in the state.

The Gombe State Deputy Governor said the government would look into the 7 demands the NLC listed

“Being concerned about these challenges, the government in all its projects took into consideration the people first in conceiving, executing and delivering projects and services across the state. All that has been done and achieved in the health, education, environment, human capital development, agriculture and intervention by way of palliatives are for the people,” said Dr. Jatau.

The Gombe State Deputy Governor reassured workers of the government’s commitment to providing a conducive atmosphere for them to perform efficiently and effectively while emphasizing the importance of creating an environment to foster productivity, innovation, and employee well-being.
