The Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria has called on media practitioners to join the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters for improve standard and professionalism in the broadcasting practice.
The Chairman of Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria and Chief Executive officer of Multi choice Nigeria Limited Mr. John Ugbe made the call in Abuja, Nigeria when he visited Voice of Nigeria on a sensitisation campaign on the benefits of membership of Society of Nigerian Broadcasters.
Mr Ugbe said that training and retraining of media practitioners shall be the main focus of the society.
Mr Ugbe added that the essence of the organization is for journalists to have a professional body that would ensure standard in broadcast.
“Let’s have proper standard, lets be able to hold ourselves to proper standard and professionalism and this body has the mandate as BON it was handed to us and asked to re-emphasied it”.
The Vice Chairman of BON and Director General Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria Dr Mansir Liman said broadcasters should be able to be talking to each other on what to do as professionals.
“I think us as broadcaster’s professionals, we need to be talking to ourselves, we should not allow others to be talking to us without we ourselves talking to each other, and the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters is going to give us that forum to tell ourselves the truth about what we are doing as professionals”,Dr. Liman said.
The Executive Secretary of BON Dr Yemisi Bamgbose said now is the right time for the industry to have a professional body and the minimum qualification to be a member is a diploma , full membership for those that serve ten years and above while Associate members is five years.
“The registration form is five thousand naira, there is a limit to those that would be members of the society, membership is open to those in programmes, News, information Technology and Engineering, and the minimum qualification is Diploma and membership fee would be ten thousand naira on yearly basis for associate member and fifteen thousand naira for full member”, Mr Yemisi Bamgbiye explained.
Society of Nigerian Broadcasters, SBN, is a body responsibility for the regulation of the activities of broadcasters in Nigeria and also ensure standard and professionalism in disseminating information.
The society of Nigeria Broadcasters is expected to improve the broadcast industry abilities to check fake news, distortion of facts through training of members when fully operational in Nigeria.
