The annual gala is a fundraiser for the self-funding Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The proceeds pay for operating the institute and putting on annual blockbuster exhibits like the current “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”.
The two-part exhibit explores the roots of American fashion and this year’s exhibit launched at the gala Monday night and opens to the public on May 7.
Although traditionally held on the first Monday in May, because of the pandemic, the 2021 version was held last September and big names in various industries like Music, Hollywood, and Sports graced the ‘Gilded glamour’ themed event.
Both events brought in 33.7 million dollars, the institute reported.
Icons like Barbados musician and Fenty owner, Rihanna, was honoured with a marble statue at the gala. Late Marilyn Monroe was also remembered as socialite and media personality, Kim Kardashian wore her dress to the event.
